The evolution of animation allows the introduction of the main character, Mei Lee, to have the dynamics of a real character, even when animated. There is nothing realistic about the characters in the film, neither in their faces nor in their movements, what looks very authentic is the way the film is narrated, each frame, each cut between shots. Mei Lee is thirteen years old and overflowing with energy. The first fifteen minutes of the film are like a speeding train, it manages to show the intense vitality of its protagonist.
Until finally the main conflict of the film arrives: Mei Lee, after she can not suppress her enthusiasm for a boy, wakes up the next day transformed into a huge red panda. Between the pressure of her strict mother and her awakening to adolescence, that huge hairy, red and fragrant alter ego of hers is unleashed in her. She first hides it with shame but then her parents tell her that the same thing happens to all the women in the family. It is obvious that the film talks about puberty although if the story is strictly followed the metaphor is not very coherent, it only triggers it.
