A mixture of pirate history, fantasy, with doses of Bobby Dick but Japanese kaiju, the film takes us to a world where a kingdom has declared war on sea monsters! Heroes of the time, the captains/monster hunters, who with their fearless crews make sure to fill the books of the kingdom with stories of courage and bravery. The little, orphaned Maisie also reads such a book and decides to run away from the orphanage and sneak aboard the legendary ship of Captain Crow and his right-hand man, the intrepid Jacob Holland. Captain Crow has been furiously chasing the red beast for years. But are sea monsters what they seem? Little Maisie will make the journey and the discovery that will turn the kingdom upside down.
An excellent fairy tale, with beautiful images, very good animation, flawless voice performances and also with a script that makes sure that it is easy for young children but is much deeper than what it seems. Somewhere it will definitely remind of Moana and not by chance as the director, Chris Williams, was in the staff of directors and screenwriters of the Disney film. Anyway, his work here is also worth talking about.
The Sea Monster has action scenes that delight in their orchestration and precision. There are moments when you feel like you’re watching a kaiju movie, with Williams emphasizing the bulk of the monsters. But it also has interesting characters, such as Captain Crow, as well as cleverly written dialogues. It has as much humor as it needs, it has a little girl, for the children to identify with, and a little creature that they will like.
