The title harks back to the character’s early days, when artist Bob Kane invented him as The Bat-Man for publisher Detective Comics (DC) in the late 1930s. Superheroes weren’t quite as fashionable as they are now, but thanks to Action Comics’ successful new hero Superman, the demand for more outrageously dressed crime fighters quickly grew. Batman was given a cape, a mask and a tragic backstory, but essentially remained ‘just’ a persistent detective, with no superpowers.
So back to basics, for this eighth solo film under the Warner Brothers flag. While the studio took a hit with Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy earlier this century, its subsequent attempts to rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe were plagued by creative missteps and internal drama. Batman was more or less reduced to a glorified supporting role as a result. When Affleck stepped down as the intended star, writer and director of the first Batman film in the DC Extended Universe, the opportunity was seized to break new ground. Matt Reeves, director of successful genre titles like CLOVERFIELD(2007) and the last two parts of the recent PLANET OF THE APES trilogy, was then given ample scope to develop his own vision, separate from the DCEU.
