Morbius (2022)

The coexistence of different forms of life and the fight against the primal urges and instincts that the “being” evokes in one – this is exactly the idea behind the story of Dr. Morbid. The expectations of the film, which was postponed several times, were high, but unfortunately “Morbius”, like the “Venom” works, turns out to be a half-baked, listless and shallow mix of body horror, thriller drama and comic action. A main reason for this are the mostly completely irrelevant and unspectacular performances of the actors. From Tyrese Gibson as a replaceable FBI agent to pale Jared Harris as a doctor and mentor.

Only Matt Smith as a childhood friend of Morbius is able to set accents. Even the main actor Leto acts half-baked and unwinds his role rather bored. Even if you have to concede that Leto is a quick-change artist: you can see the suffering and pain in his character at the beginning and purely visually he manages to at least credibly portray the decline and health decline of Morbius. Another annoyance, however, are the mediocre CGI effects that already appear during the transformation into the vampire creature.

Furthermore, it’s unclear what director Daniel Espinosa is trying to achieve with the many unnecessary slow-motion sequences and the obvious but unsuccessful allusions to the “Bullet Time” special effects of the “Matrix” films (especially in the action scenes). Those moments get on your nerves over time, as does the constant darkness and gloom that just keeps you under-recognized. In any case, there is no tension or an ominous atmosphere.
