Folk horror is unique for a number of reasons, one of which is that it embraces weirdness. Any story can be fueled by and made to feel strange by the legends and traditions of the various cultures throughout the world. From another angle, all religious narratives—including Christian ones—appear to be quite bizarre. As a result, you don’t really give these movies’ extreme experimentation with bizarre visuals and sounds much thought. This is how these movies are meant to be.
But weirdness and confusion alone don’t make for a compelling movie. To make all of these elements work together harmoniously, you need characters, plot, character arcs, themes, and engaging dialogue. It is tough. It is difficult to hold the people responsible for a movie’s failure to accomplish this because it is not an easy thing to do, but someone has to take the fall when it does.
