Vic and Melinda Van Allen are a couple in the small town of Little Wesley, Louisiana. They are married and have a daughter. Her marriage is kept cold, while she has lovers that he accepts. Without that deal, the couple breaks up, but with that deal, the tension builds. One of Melinda’s ex-lovers has been murdered and the crime remains unsolved. Vic decides to make jokes about him being the killer, but this joke is taken seriously and many begin to believe that it is not just a joke.
This police is directed by Adrian Lyne and the script is based on Patricia Highsmith. Between the director of Fatal Attraction and the author of The talented Mr. Ripley , the film finds an exact tone, unexpectedly successful, where the darkest sense of humor mixes with the thick line of a gimmicky show. Everything seems to be in sight and at the same time full of mystery. The suspense and tension are maintained throughout the plot and the lines of dialogue are worthy of classic cinema. There are no movies like this anymore, even in the soundtrack everything seems to belong to another era.
Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck shine like those movie couples of the past, managing a sober, elegant ambiguity, charged with energy. Adrian Lyne, who used to have a conservative and moralistic discourse in many of his films, here flirts with an Alfred Hitchcock-style tone, in the sense of putting humor into marriage and its more sinister side. Murder, mistrust, sex and perversion, the elements that are seen in several films by the director of M Dial for Murder or Suspicion and that for the first time, after several decades, Adrien Lyne has achieved, bridging the gap, emulate.
